Hospice Regattas Championship

Best and Most Fun Regatta Ever

Would you believe that one of the best Hospice Regattas Championships ever took place in Oswego, NY? An event that’s previously drawn competitors to Annapolis and St. Petersburg?

That’s exactly what happened over four days in August. “I want to thank the Oswego Yacht Club for putting on a wonderful regatta,” said Cedric Lewis, whose team represented MD-Annapolis at the Championship.

Noting that he has been to many major regattas, Lewis added, “I think this is the best I’ve ever been to.”

Housed in a former bar in a small city on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario, all-volunteer Oswego YC hosts three regional regattas every summer: the Oswego County Hospice Cup in June, Sail Oswego in July, and a J/24 District 7 event in August.

Building on the J/24 regatta, OYC enlisted J/24 District leadership and owners to put on a first-class Championship for teams from Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Connecticut and New York.

What earned the teams’ plaudits?

  • Well-prepped boats and sails in comparable condition, with no team on the same boat twice – yes!
  • Challenging wind/wave conditions dealt with by first-class race management -check!
  • Great hospitality offered by a congenial host club – of course!

No wonder competitors enjoyed the 2017 Championship so much. In his 50 years of racing, said Randy Lenz, this was the “best and most fun regatta ever.”

Lenz, who represented SC-Hartwell Lake, said the “race committee never postponed and ran 9 great races.” He added. “You guys at Oswego did a job better than the blue blazer flag belt clubs.”

The team representing Oswego’s own hospice regatta finished first overall, ensuring that the Virginia Brown Inspiration Trophy will remain on display at OYC for a year.

Skipper Tom Doran acknowledged a ‘home-lake’ advantage. “When the lake was really rough, we are kind of used to that condition more than some of the other teams. We knew how to take care of it.”

“Without the hard work of the Oswego Yacht Club and the generosity of the District 7 J/24 fleet, the 2017 Hospice Regattas Championship would not have been possible,” said Alliance president Tom Tomlinson

“We can’t thank enough all the volunteers at OYC for helping to put on a very successful Championship, and all the J/24 owners that donated their boats to the event. Truly a remarkable effort,” he added.
