Jack was introduced to racing late in his sailing career, and drove
his first sailboat race at 30 years old aboard his J/30 the former
“Irish Wake.”
With the acquisition of J/105 RUM PUPPY
in 2000, he and core crew Brent Allen and Leigh Patterson have steadily
moved up in the class rankings over the years, where ‘winning
the party’ and ‘chillin the most’ - while still
paramount goals of the program - are closely followed by trying
to put in an occasional good race. He attributes Rum’s steady
improvement in the 105 Fleet to the outstanding competition provided
in the class by world class sailors such as current J/22 World Champion
Alec Cutler (Hooked on Tonics), Farr 40
World Champion and J/105 National Champion Steve Phillips (Le
Renard), and many other outstanding J/105 club racers
in the very competitive Chesapeake Bay J/105 Fleet.
Both of Jack’s parents passed away of cancer at age 60, with
their families by their sides, at home and comfortable because of
the work of Hospice and the many contributors and supporters who
make it possible.
