7th Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
August 29, 2009
More than $186,000 netted at Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
Event united health care professionals, sailing community, local businesses and families to support hospice patients
SAN DIEGO — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the Seventh Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29. The event netted a total of more than $186,000, which will support Sharp HospiceCare’s program to build hospice homes in San Diego.
The event launched Friday evening at the Hotel Del Coronado with a pre-race dinner and program emceed by former KNSD weather anchor, Pat Brown. The sold-out gathering included dinner for more than 360 guests, a live and silent auction and dancing. On Saturday, 19 privately owned yachts sponsored 270 guests who enjoyed a view of the race while on the water.
Saturday’s regatta drew 48 sailboat racers who competed on a course stretching from the north end to the south end of the San Diego Bay. The boat, Anarchy, skippered by Scot Tempesta, won the overall regatta, and will qualify to compete in the 2010 National Hospice Regatta Championship in Rochester, New York.
Two teams of doctors participated in an exhibition race, Physicians’ Challenge, aboard legendary America’s Cup sailing yachts, as part of fundraising efforts. Winning the event were doctors from Sharp Community Medical Group, who crewed Stars and Stripes, beating out challengers from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group aboard Abracadabra.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for patients and their families struggling with a life-limiting illness. The money raised directly funds Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build hospice homes in San Diego. The campaign has led to the completion of the organization’s second hospice home in Del Cerro.
Grossmont Healthcare District, the title sponsor of the regatta, donated $30,000 to the event.

Sharp HospiceCare (http://www.sharp.com/hospice/ ) has been providing end-of-life care throughout San Diego County since 1991. To date, more than 17,000 individuals and their families have received comprehensive care from our HospiceCare’s highly trained, dedicated professionals and volunteers. Sharp HospiceCare is designed around the needs of patients, with the intention of keeping family connected during this difficult time. Sharp HospiceCare provides comprehensive end-of-life care and compassionate support to those facing life-threatening illnesses, along with their families and friends. Regardless of the situation or health condition, we are dedicated to helping patients and families with everything from relief of physical discomfort to emotional and spiritual support.
Homes for Hospice In communities across America, relatives and friends are caring for loved ones who are chronically ill and at the end stage of a terminal illness. For most, it is an all-consuming responsibility. Sharp’s Homes for Hospice Program offers patients and their families a unique environment that delivers care for patients needs in a comfortable home setting. The homes are staffed 24 hours a day by licensed nurses, and feature private rooms, spacious living rooms, home-cooked meals and beautiful gardens. Homes for Hospice are licensed by the California Department of Health Services and patients are accepted based on their health needs, not their ability to pay. Homes for Hospice is the only program of its kind in San Diego, and its success provides the momentum for Sharp HospiceCare to develop additional homes for the terminally ill. The need for this kind of care far exceeds the supply of available options. Sharp’s vision and long-term goal is to create enough homes throughout San Diego County within the decade to meet the needs of the community.
