Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
August 24 & 25, 2007
Sharp HospiceCare Annual Regatta Raises $166,000
to Fund Programs for Local Hospice Patients and Families
SAN DIEGO — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the 5th annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25. Competitors raced for a chance to compete in the 2008 Hospice Regattas National Championship in Annapolis, Maryland.
A record-breaking $166,000 was raised to support Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for terminally ill patients and their families throughout San Diego County. The money raised will directly fund Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, which is helping to build new hospice homes, similar to the furnished, four-bedroom LakeView Home, in San Diego. Grossmont Healthcare District, the title sponsor of the regatta, donated $25,000 to the event.
The annual regatta launched Friday at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort with events for spectators and yachtsmen alike, including a pre-race celebration hosted by KNSD Channel 7/39’s Weather Anchor Pat Brown. The sold-out gathering included dinner, a silent auction and dancing to the music of Rockola.
On Saturday, spectators headed to the Coronado Yacht Club to enjoy lunch and an up-close view of the regatta from spectator yachts. In the premiere event, both experienced racers and leisure sailors set sail to race, which started in North Bay and ended in the South Bay near the Coronado Yacht Club.
Consistently ranked as the No. 1 integrated health care system in Southern California by Modern Healthcare, Sharp HealthCare is San Diego’s most comprehensive health care delivery system. It is recognized for clinical excellence for services in cardiac, cancer, and multiorgan transplantation, as well as orthopaedics, rehabilitation, behavioral health and women’s health. The Sharp system, which was a Gold-level recipient in the 2006 California Awards for Performance Excellence program, includes four acute-care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, three affiliated medical groups and a health plan.
