Dear Organizers, Friends and Supporters of Hospice Regattas:

Hello, 2019! We would like to begin the new year by thanking everyone involved with hospice regattas for what you have achieved as you raise funds for and increase awareness of non-profit hospice services. Our mission is to help you do that, but it is you who are on track to have raised almost $2 million in 2018 for your benefiting hospices, based on year-end reports.

In August 2018, teams representing many of you took part in a very successful Hospice Regattas Championship! Congratulations to Tom Doran and his team from Oswego for winning a second consecutive Championship! We would also like to the thank the owners of J/24s in District 7 who generously donated their boats for our competitors’ use. And finally, we would like to thank Commodore Dan Mather, John Gary and all the members of Oswego Yacht Club for hosting the event two years in a row. OYC did a fantastic job with both on-the-water race management and shoreside social activities.

The Alliance had a productive year in 2018, undertaking several initiatives to benefit our members:

  • Opening an online store for members to purchase Willard Bond posters and notecard sets at significant discounts, which can increase your net funds for hospice. We also opened an online store with souvenir apparel, featuring the Willard Bond art, that can produce revenue for you. To visit these stores, click on links found in the Member Area of the NHRA website; you will have to login to get the Member Regatta discount on posters.
  • Obtaining sponsor gifts: SailorBags offered 10 member regattas one of its valuable products for auction/raffle fundraising. We continue to seek such extras from sponsors of the Alliance and of the Championship.
  • Communicating more efficiently with you, others involved in hospice regattas, sailors and the general public. Our Constant Contact email newsletter and Facebook page include hospice information you can use, news about member regattas, the championship, and the Alliance, as well as items of general interest to sailors.
  • Partnering our volunteer board members with individual regattas, to help us understand your events and learn what else we could do to enhance your success, whether it is raising more funds, reducing expenses, or spreading the hospice story.
  • Ensuring that you can reach the Alliance 24/7, through a Virtual Assistant. Our VA manages our membership database, and monitors and redirects email sent to nhra@hospiceregattas.org. This supplements, not replaces, your ability to contact your board partner or other board members.
  • Collaborating with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) on webinars and other materials to make it easier for you to share the message of hospice care at your regatta.
  • Sharing ideas among member regattas, to help maximize net proceeds going to hospices. Some regattas’ use of memorial burgees, for example, is a great idea to raise more money and more awareness, which could also be used by other members.

Finally, we look forward to the 2019 Hospice Regattas Championship in Charleston, SC, on June 20-23. We are grateful to the College of Charleston Sailing Association for agreeing to host the Championships in 2019 and 2020. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Championship, and of the Alliance, so we look forward to welcoming all competitors to beautiful Charleston for this historic event.

The 2019 hospice regatta season kicks off with our first regatta in Nashville, April 13-14 and April 27-28 and continues into November.
