The regatta has long been known as the sport of kings. On Nov. 20,
32 boats of every size and shape gathered at the starting buoy in
the Gulf of Mexico for the first Annual Naples/Marco Island Hospice
Regatta Fund-raiser.
Friday night, the regatta committee and other guests attended a
reception at the Marco Island Yacht Club to honor all the sponsors.
Zola Keller of Bonita Springs presented a fashion show for the audience
that included several gowns.
This year's regatta continued as an annual Hospice signature event
to raise awareness in the community about Hospice of Naples and
all it stands for.

Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta
Excerpt from Southern Bay News #221, 10/17/04

Plenty of Classic Design (25 years or more old) showed up to do
the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta weekend before this past. While
there was no racing on Saturday, zero knots of wind, there was wind
a'plenty for 85 boats to race on Sunday. Enough wind in fact, according
to reliable
reports, to lay the skipjack Claude W. Sommers, on her beam ends
on an oyster bar.
Overall winner of the regatta was James Covington Jr. in Sunrise,
his Herrschoff Sloop 28. To read the entire news release please

Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta -- Oct 8-10, 2004

PRELIMINARY REPORT: The
funds raised by the Hospice "Turkey Shoot" will benefit
three hospices serving eight counties on both sides of the Rappahannock
River.
With 105 boats registered, the Saturday racing was cancelled for lack
of wind, but Sunday was a rollicking race in gusty winds -- very fast
and competitive.
One of two large restored skipjacks racing for the Skipjack Trophy
capsized, partially blocking the finish line as over eighty boats
were bearing down on the line in a pursuit race--an unexpected challenge
for the racers and the race commitee. Another boat capsized on the
course as well. Eight people in the water were all picked up by rescue
boats.
Although saddened at the sight of the skipjack on its side, the racers
had a great time and many have said that it was the most fun of any
Turkey Shoot race yet. For more details please visit

Jack Biddle might not have earned his class' top spot in last Saturday's
Hospice Cup XXIII, but he and his Rum Puppy crew turned in a solid
performance in difficult conditions to take the Hospice Cup Trophy.
The trophy recognizes the best performance over the past three years.
Biddle's team gave up first and second in the 11-boat J/105 class
to Stewart and Eric Greene and their Dove crew and Art Libby's Results
team, respectively, but when scored on a high-point basis with last
year's second-place finish of 20 and a win in 2002's 24-boat class,
Rum Puppy emerged over several teams in other classes to take the
big trophy.
Hospice Cup makes a Difference

For many of the 92 crews racing in Hospice Cup XXIII yesterday,
it was a short and sweet experience.
In light and persistently shifting air, all 11 regular CBYRA classes
sailed a three-legged, 4.76-mile windward-leeward course, while
the six boats of the Hospice Class sailed a government mark course
of 4.6 miles. From the time the first starting gun went off for
the PHRF A0 boats at 11:05 a.m., the entire fleet, including the
Hospice Class which started a little over an hour later, had finished
by 2:15 p.m.
Hosted on the water by Shearwater Sailing Club, Hospice Cup XXIII
was a big success off the water, too. Final figures are not yet
available, but the event raised over $550,000 to directly benefit
six area hospices in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington,
D.C.: Capital Hospice, Community Hospices, Hospice of the Chesapeake,
Montgomery Hospice, Hospice of Queen Anne’s, and St. Agnes
Hospice.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — For many Mainers,
the past weekend felt like the first real summer weather of the
season. It was hot and humid with thundershowers building over the
land in the afternoon. On the coast, the fog came and went frequently.
For the eighth annual Hospice Regatta, conditions could have been
better, but they could have been considerably worse.

As it was, conditions were a bit damp for the Junior Regatta, which
started Thursday. But when it came time for the big boats to head
out around the course on Saturday, the skies brightened, although
visibility remained less than ideal on some of the outer legs of
the race.

Optimist State Championships To Feature in Junior Competition
By Aaron Porter, Courtesy

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — July 17 will mark the eighth sailing of
the annual Hospice Regatta of Maine. While the heart of the charity
fund-raising event has remained the same, there are some new elements
being added in 2004.
Gordon Haaland
This summer the Junior Hospice Regatta has been expanded to race
over two days and includes the Maine State Optimist Championship
series; the poker run is back for a second summer of powerboat participation,
and freshly retired Gettysburg College President Gordon Haaland
is serving as race director.
Haaland, who has been summering on Mount Desert Island since the
1970s, is an enthusiastic racing sailor. He traces his predilection
for sailing to some Norwegian seafaring heritage and some one-design
racing on Long Island Sound during his early youth.

Dunigan.
On April 16 the 5th annual National Hospice Regatta Championship
took place at Annapolis, Maryland. The Bada Boom team skippered
by Chris Kastan represented Niagara Hospice well, taking first place
out of 13 teams. The Kastan team, racing on board Bada Boom, earned
eligibility for the National Championship after winning the 4th
Annual Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta last August 9 that took
place on Lake Ontario. When asked about the experience of advancing
to the national competition, Kastan stated: "It was a superlative
event, from the organization, to the volunteers, the fraternity,
the race management, the competition, and especially to the cause
it benefits."
The original and so far only national sailing championship for
charity, the National Hospice Regatta Championship hosted winning
skippers and teams from the 13 hospice regattas held in 2004 throughout
the U.S. The hospice regattas raise funds and awareness for the
charitable work of hospices. Hospice care helps adults and children
who are terminally ill, without regard to ability to pay. Many hospice
services are not covered by insurance. Each program treats and comforts
terminally ill patients and their families, at home or in the hospital
or long term care facility.
The National Hospice Regatta Championship is organized by the National
Hospice Regatta Alliance, a network for the growing number of hospice
regattas held nationwide. The Alliance helps new and existing hospice
regattas be successful, and hosts the championship to promote and
support them all. Its activities are supported by national sponsor
money and in-kind contributions or discounts.
Racing was held on the Chesapeake Bay, off Annapolis, Maryland
with race headquarters stationed at Mears Marina, located in historic
Eastport just minutes from downtown Annapolis.
The 5th Annual Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta will take place
August 14, 2004.

To the Fleet,
Reporting live from on board the mark set boat "Surprise"
from the 2004 National Hospice Alliance Regatta on the Chesepeake
Bay off the shores of Annapolis Maryland.
Oswego's own Brendan "Fireball" Benson, after a day of
light air sailing is in firm control of forth place with only 4
points separating Bredan and his crew from the third place flag.
With two more days of racing Brendan is looking good to be in one
of the top three places.
After a slow start with a 5th in the 1st race, and then with less
than a minute to go in the 2nd race Brendan has to settle for a
9th losing a total of 4 places at the finish after being trapped
on port tack and unable to gybe to the finish line. But in the 3rd
and final race of the day of Brendan and crew come back to take
a convincing 2nd place finish.
Tomorrow will be a piviotal for for the OYC team when we find out
if their 2nd place finish at the end of day 1 was just a fluke or
if indeed they have found their groove in the J 105.

The Turkey Shoot Loses
a Champion -- March 20, 2004
On Saturday, March 20, Dr. John Moseley, overall winner of the
2003 Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta, passed away unexpectedly aboard
his sailboat, Tusitala, in Deltaville, Virginia. Jack in many ways
epitomized what the Turkey Shoot is all about. Tusitala was an older
boat, which he purchased from his father-in-law, a mechanical engineer
who worked for Howard Hughes in California. His father-in-law designed
and built the boat in the early 1950s and 60s. .Jack raced Tusitala
in the Turkey Shoot in 2002 and 2003 and his crew consisted of his
family and close friends. He was a tough competitor but still saw
the races as fun events for his family and as an opportunity to
show off his beautiful boat. Jack said that he did not know Tusitala
would do so
well against other classic boats and was surprised when he won the
overall trophy in 2003.

As winner of the 2003 Turkey Shoot, Jack was to represent this
area of Virginia in the National Hospice regatta in Annapolis this
spring. He and his crew were to begin practicing shortly in a J-105
which is the class of boat that is used in the National Regatta.
Jack was an excellent sailor and was looking forward to competing
in Annapolis. We don?t know how well he would have finished in that
regatta, but we do know he and his family would have enjoyed every
moment of the competition. He will be missed.
To honor Dr. John Moseley's memory, a special competition will
be held at this year Turkey Shoot where only previous overall winners
will be invited to compete. It will be known as the 2004 Jack Moseley
Champion of Champions' series.

SAILING IN A 'BLAZE' OF GLORY
By MIKE LEBOEUF, Sports Editor
OSWEGO - Oswego Yacht Club member Brendan Benson blazed a winning
trail in 2003.
Aboard his J-30 "Blaze," Benson and his crew picked up
prestigious victories in the Sail Oswego Regatta, the Eastern Yacht
Club Regatta, and the Challenge Cup Regatta in Sodus.

But perhaps the triumph Benson cherishes the most was his win in
the 2003 Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta. Hospice is a cause close
to his heart.
Benson's father died five years ago, and that's when he became
more familiar with what hospice services provide.
"We didn't use hospice as much as we should have," the
Red Creek resident said. "It just meant a lot to us to win
this regatta. We worked hard for it."
That victory qualified Benson for the 2004 National Hospice Regatta
Championship, which will take place April 16-18 in Annapolis, Md.
Benson and his four-man crew will be competing there against about
15 other winning skippers and teams from the other hospice regattas
held in 2003 throughout the United States. This will be the fifth
annual national regatta.
