Regatta benefits hospices and crews
On the Water -- Annie Linskey
Next weekend, assuming the Chesapeake Bay isn't bombarded with gale-force winds, about 100 sailboats are expected to compete in one of the largest charity regattas in the state: The Hospice Cup.
The regatta has been sailed every year since 1981 - so this year marks its 25th anniversary.
Now there are 24 Hospice Cup regattas held in sailing communities all over the country, including in California, Florida, and the Great Lakes. The first race, however, was on the bay. We reached Virginia Brown, one of the founders of the Hospice Cup, at her Tidewater, Va., home on Friday, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto passed through the Mid-Atlantic.
Tell me about the first race.
The day of the race was just one of those perfect, perfect days. The weather was just right. When it is good, it is great - being outdoors on the good old bay. I'm looking at it now and she's in a foul mood.

Helping To Ease Dying
Vienna group oversees 25th Hospice Cup, raising awareness and funds for hospice care.
By Mike DiCicco
When Vienna resident Jean Kluttz was in college in the ‘60s, she read a magazine article about the British phenomenon of hospice care, the practice of helping the terminally ill to make the most of their last months and die comfortably in their homes. “I thought that was a great idea,” she said. “I also read that it was being resisted in this area.”
Years later, in the early ‘80s, she was a member of the Shearwater Sailing Club, based in Annapolis, Md., when the club began managing the Hospice Cup, a sailboat regatta that raised money for early hospices in the D.C. area. The undertaking “fit this little, budding interest that had laid dormant” in her, she said.

Memorial Sails and Memorial Fleet
To express the theme “Celebrate Life,” sailors and hospice supporters are invited to write the names of every person whose life is being remembered at the Hospice Regatta on a special commemorative Optimist sail as a permanent memorial tribute.
During the Clambake on Friday, August 25, Genesee Yacht Club member Randy Burr wrote the name of his late wife Pat on the 2006 Memorial Sail, while his friends Jan Ziobrowski and Billy Smith waited their turn.

Each year, one more Opti rigged with the previous year’s Memorial Sail joins the Hospice Regatta Memorial Fleet.
With junior sailors at the helm of each boat, the growing Fleet of four Optis cruised on the Genesee River during Regatta parties on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26.
Clearly visible from the Charlotte Lighthouse and from the yacht clubs and marinas on the Irondequoit side, the Memorial Fleet makes for a very fitting and emotional expression of hospice principles.

Grand River Hospice Cup 2006
August 25-27

Regatta ’06 will always be remembered as the race following “The Flood”. Thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 60 mph dropped more then 10 inches on rain on July the 28th. The Grand River rose more than 15 feet within 24 hours – a record flood stage. The water torrents created eight-foot waves in the river! Large sections of docks, and more than 70 boats were torn loose, washed into Lake Erie and crashed upon the beaches miles to the east. Many of these boats would have participated in the regatta, but did not have the opportunity.

25 Years Racing for a Cause
SAIL MAGAZINE, August 2006, page 12
VIRGINIA BROWN, HONORED EARLIER THIS YEAR for founding the Hospice Regattas that have rasied more than $15 million for nonreimbursed care, had cared for her terminally ill husband at home before being asked to raise funds for a new local hospice. Her preference for "something different, not the usual black-tie affair, but fun, family-oriented, and outside" created a racing tradition now a quarter-century old and still growing.
Brown's first Hospice Regatta was sailed on Chesapeake Bay in 1981, when the hospice movement was in its infancy. Brown says, "Although people think of hospice care for the dying, for every terminal patient there are four or five surviving family members or loved ones also benefiting from care and counseling. Hospice is about living every moment until death without pain, with dignity." In 2006 there will be [25] Hospice Regattas (www.hospiceregattas.org) across the country. They are all-volunteer, with every dollar going to a local hospice. --Rick Friese

Naples-Marco Island Hospice Regatta
Rained out regatta still a winner for Hospice
02/09/2006 - By Sue Keller
Some not-so-typical chilly, windy and wet weather caused this year's Second Annual Naples-Marco Island Hospice Regatta to change course. The regatta, which had been scheduled to take place last Saturday, was cancelled. However, the shore party staged at the Bayfront in Naples was a big success. The 26 participants in this year's regatta received the sad news at 6:30 a.m. that officials had decided to cancel the race due to a fast-moving weather front bringing high winds, rain and lightning to the region.
Gary Schwarting, the winner of the “Winds Of Hospice” Memorial Trophy poses for a picture with regatta chairperson Mary Baron. Schwarting, the skipper of the yacht Obsession, raised over $20,000 in donations for Hospice.
