PeeWee (right foreground, sail # 4041), skippered by Kiki Werner of Rochester Yacht Club, finished first overall in the Spinnaker Fleet and won the Champion trophy at Rochester's Hospice Regatta on Saturday, August 22.
Torrential rains drenched a lot of people late on Saturday, August 22 during the 11th annual Hospice Regatta at Rochester Yacht Club, but the storm didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm.
Kiki Werner of Rochester Yacht Club won the Hospice Regatta Champion trophy by finishing first overall in the Spinnaker Fleet. The top five finishers in the Spinnaker fleet were:
Pee Wee (J22), Kiki Werner, Rochester YC
Tastes Like Pennies (Evelyn 25), Todd Schumacher, Brockport YC

Seven junior sailors sailed the Memorial Fleet of Opti dinghies during the Hospice Regatta Clambake at Rochester Yacht Club on Friday, August 21. Unfortunately, stormy weather late on Saturday prevented the fleet -- rigged with Memorial Sails from previous years -- from launching.
Sean Grape won the Charlie Bertrand Memorial Trophy for finishing first overall in the Regatta’s Genoa-Only fleet. Top five finishers in the GO fleet were:
Dolly, Pearson 26 , Sean Grape, Brockport YC
Liberty, Catalina 27 , Jon Fox, Brockport YC
Bangalore, 26 Nonsuch, Denis Doyle, Rochester YC
Playtime, Pearson 26, Robert Spencer, Brockport YC
Stiletto, C&C 24, Larry Stephans, Genesee YC

Bob MacIntyre of Genesee YC, owner and skipper of “Double Shot,” won the Hildebrandt Spirit Award, presented annually to the boat whose skipper and crew raise the largest amount of donations to Hospice. MacIntyre and his family and crew raised more than $6,500. He also received a Jim Ely Memorial Award for exceeding the $20,000 threshold in cumulative fundraising.
More than 700 people attended the Regatta Cruise and Clambake (Friday, August 21) and the Regatta Party (Saturday), and hundreds of names and messages were written onto the 2009 Memorial Sail. Proceeds from the event are expected to exceed $50,000 to support the efforts of Lifetime Care Hospice in improving end-of-life care in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area.
Hundreds of names and messages about loved ones who have died were written on the 2009 Memorial Sail at Rochester's 11th annual Hospice Regatta.

Hospice Regatta
August 15-17, 2008
Regatta Celebrates Life, Raises Funds for Hospice
Dave and Renee Spang of Rochester won Rochester’s tenth annual Hospice Regatta on Saturday, August 16 by a margin of more than two minutes over “Arrow” and skipper Brook Richardson of Fairport (Rochester Yacht Club) after more than three hours of racing on Lake Ontario. The Spangs’ boat, “US 30,” is a custom-designed 30-foot yacht. “Arrow,” a Petersen 34, finished less than a minute ahead of “Silver Bullet,” part of the RYC fleet of Beneteau 40.7 yachts.

Moondance from Genoa Only fleet was the overall winner on this course, skippers are wearing souvenir t-shirts.
The Hospice Regatta is the Rochester area’s premier charity regatta, with proceeds going to support Hospice services provided by Lifetime Care to terminally ill people and their families. This year's event was hosted by Genesee Yacht Club (GYC), and net proceeds are expected to exceed $75,000.
GYC member Elaine Carter, skipper of “Bote Hook,” won the Hildebrandt Spirit Award, presented annually to the boat whose skipper and crew raise the largest amount of donations to Hospice. Funds raised by the Regatta help to support operations of Lifetime Care’s new Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center, which opened last November in Greece.

The original painting donated to the Regatta by the late Franz Schwenk was won by Barry Gheer of Pultneyville Yacht Club, who plans to display the painting in the PYC clubhouse.
On Saturday, the 62 boats that competed on two courses enjoyed ideal sailing conditions, with sunny skies and increasingly brisk winds during the day.
Larry Sill and Eileen Duggan (GYC) won the Charlie Bertrand Memorial Trophy for finishing first overall on “Moondance” in the Regatta’s Genoa-Only fleet. As the overall winner of the Hospice Regatta, the Spangs earn an invitation to the Hospice Regattas National Championship [National Hospice Regattas Championship] next spring.

Skipper Elaine Carter creates a permanent memorial by writing loved ones' names on the Memorial Sail.
More than 700 people attended people attended the Regatta Cruise and Clambake (Friday, August 15) or the Regatta Party (Saturday), and hundreds of names and remembrance messages were written onto the 2008 Memorial Sail. A Memorial Fleet of six Opti dinghies rigged with Memorial Sails from prior years cruised by the party site on Saturday, just before the awards presentation.

Hospice Regatta
August 18, 2007

Skip Shumway of Rochester Yacht Club won Rochester’s ninth annual Hospice Regatta on Saturday, August 18 by a margin of 6 seconds over Jay Tovey (Rochester Yacht Club/Genesee Yacht Club) after 3½ hours of racing on Lake Ontario.
Shumway, who currently heads RYC’s board of directors as its Commodore, was the skipper of a 23-foot Sonar, “For Sale.” Tovey’s 29-foot boat, “The Fish” finished 16 seconds ahead of Dave and Renee Spang’s 30-foot custom yacht, “US 30.”
The Hospice Regatta is the Rochester area’s premier charity regatta, with proceeds going to support Hospice services provided by Lifetime Care to terminally ill people and their families. This year's event was hosted by Rochester Yacht Club.
Peter Pape and Hank Stuart, owner and skipper of “Blue Knight,” won the Hildebrandt Spirit Award, presented annually to the boat whose skipper and crew raise the largest amount of donations to Hospice. Pape, Stuart and the rest of the Blue Knight crew raised more than $19,000, with the funds helping to pay for construction of Lifetime Care’s new Hospice Care Center, now under construction in Greece.
Revenues for the Regatta topped $100,000 for the first time, and net proceeds are expected to exceed $90,000.
On Saturday, the 63 boats that competed in two fleets enjoyed ideal sailing conditions, with brisk winds almost all day.
As the overall winner of the Hospice Regatta, Shumway earns an invitation to the National Hospice Regattas Championship next spring in Annapolis, Maryland.
Dave and Peggy Braitsch (RYC) won the Charlie Bertrand Memorial Trophy for finishing first overall on “Moonrise” in the Regatta’s Genoa-Only fleet.
More than 600 people attended the Regatta Cruise and Clambake (Friday, August 17) and the Regatta Party (Saturday), and more names and messages were written onto the 2007 Memorial Sail than ever. A Memorial Fleet of five Opti dinghies rigged with Memorial Sails from prior years cruised by the party site on Saturday, just before the awards presentation.

Hospice Regatta Community Cruise and Clambake
August 26, 2006

Undeterred by gray skies and choppy waters, more than 75 Hospice supporters boarded 22 boats on Friday, August 25 for the inaugural Hospice Regatta Community Cruise. Later that evening, another 100 patrons and sponsors joined them for a Clambake at Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse, making this new event a very positive addition to the Hospice Regatta.
Skippers of 21 sailboats and one powerboat volunteered to take guests out for a casual cruise on the river/lake on Friday afternoon. Thanks to their hospitality and boating expertise, this was a memorable experience, although conditions on the lake kept most of the boats on the river for the afternoon.
Catered by Victoria’s Food Escapades, the first-ever Regatta Clambake brought skippers and Hospice supporters together for an evening of great fun, great food and great company, including live music by Ebbtide. One highlight of the Clambake was a brief Remembrance Ceremony, to celebrate the lives of loved ones who were memorialized at this year’s Regatta. Many attendees wrote the names of their loved ones on the 2006 Memorial Sail, on display for the evening.
Blue Knight, a J/35C with Hank Stuart at the helm, won Rochester, New York’s 8th annual Hospice Regatta on Saturday, August 26. More than 70 boats registered to compete in two fleets in what has become the Rochester area’s largest charity boating event, with the theme “Set Sail, Celebrate Life.”
All proceeds from the Regatta benefit Lifetime Care’s hospice services in Monroe, Wayne and Seneca counties, where Hospice helps families care for loved ones who are terminally ill.
About 80% of the competitors raised funds for Hospice by getting sponsors for their boats. Mark Blaakman of Pultneyville Yacht Club won the Hildebrandt Spirit Award for raising the largest amount of any skipper this year.
Blaakman and five others received the Jim Ely Memorial Achievement Awards for reaching milestone levels of $5,000 or $10,000 in cumulative donations over several years. (The award honors the late Jim Ely, a sailor who helped create the Boat Sponsorship program.) Denis Doyle, skipper of Bangalore, won the Charlie Bertrand Memorial Trophy for finishing first overall in the Genoa Only Fleet. The Bertrand Trophy was donated by the family of a sailor who died several years ago after receiving hospice services.
The Regatta also featured a Commodore’s Review as the boats returned from their day of racing with flags and banners flying and paraded past Genesee Yacht Club. Double Shot and skipper Bob MacIntyre won first prize in the Review for a Celtic-themed display featuring a live bagpipe performance.
The 2006 Hospice Regatta was hosted by the Genesee Yacht Club. Participating boats also came from Rochester Yacht Club, Shumway Marine, Voyager Marine, Brockport Yacht Club, Pultneyville Yacht Club and Sodus Bay Yacht Club.
Memorial Sails and Memorial Fleet
To express the theme “Celebrate Life,” sailors and hospice supporters are invited to write the names of every person whose life is being remembered at the Hospice Regatta on a special commemorative Optimist sail as a permanent memorial tribute.
During the Clambake on Friday, August 25, Genesee Yacht Club member Randy Burr wrote the name of his late wife Pat on the 2006 Memorial Sail, while his friends Jan Ziobrowski and Billy Smith waited their turn.
Each year, one more Opti rigged with the previous year’s Memorial Sail joins the Hospice Regatta Memorial Fleet.
With junior sailors at the helm of each boat, the growing Fleet of four Optis cruised on the Genesee River during Regatta parties on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26.
Clearly visible from the Charlotte Lighthouse and from the yacht clubs and marinas on the Irondequoit side, the Memorial Fleet makes for a very fitting and emotional expression of hospice principles.
Rochester’s 2007 Hospice Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, August 25.

Hospice Regatta

Rochester’s 7th annual Hospice Regatta took place on Saturday,
August 27, 2005. The Regatta was hosted by Rochester Yacht Club
(RYC), with assistance from Genesee Yacht Club, Shumway Marine,
Pultneyville Yacht Club and other sailing and boating organizations.
The Regatta featured a day of racing for three fleets of sailboats,
plus a Poker Run for powerboats. Winners were announced at an Awards
Ceremony at RYC.
Official results:

south gusting to 30 knots.

HILDEBRANDT SPIRIT AWARD (goes to
skipper who raises the most $ for Hospice)
Elaine Carter and the crew of Bote Hook (Genesee Yacht Club) -- they raised just short of $4,000 in donations
More than 90 boats competed in three fleets (including Ideal 18)
-- largest turnout ever
more than 80% of the boats that entered this year were sponsored,
either by the skipper him(her)self or by businesses and individuals
Pultneyville Yacht Club, a small club on the lake east of Rochester,
has a racing fleet of 16 boats -- 9 PYC boats traveled to Rochester
to sail in the Hospice Regatta, and PYC skippers finished 2nd and
3rd in $ raised for Hospice
an estimated 800 people attended the party at RYC, with 630 dinners
served
Spectators cruised on the Harbor Town Belle paddle-wheeler watching
the racing, then enjoying a Commodore’s Review (boat parade)
with prizes for the “best-dressed” boat’s skipper
and crew. At day’s end, sailors and spectators gathered for
a Party by the Shore, with barbecue dinner, beverages, live music
raffle drawings and more.
All proceeds from The Hospice Regatta go to the Hospice Endowment
Fund to support delivery of hospice and palliative care services
to patients and families in Monroe, Wayne and Seneca counties.
This Fund pays for services for uninsured individuals, provides
start-up funds for new services, and covers costs of volunteer assistance,
pastoral support, and bereavement counseling. Last year, the Regatta
raised more than $64,000 so families could receive these services.
Giving back to the community makes The Hospice Regatta special
to everyone who takes part.
"Often sailing is just for a trophy or prize, and there's
really no cause that we sail for. Sailing for Hospice gives us that
opportunity," said former Regatta champion Hank Stuart of Rochester
Yacht Club.
"All the money that we raise stays right here in the Rochester
area. We're very excited about giving something back," said
Bob MacIntyre, a Genesee Yacht Club member who serves on the Regatta
steering committee.
Like Hank and Bob, you're sure to have a great time at the Hospice
Regatta. What's more, you will be making a priceless gift - comfort
and dignity at the end of life.

Sailors Celebrate Life,
Raise $65,000 at Rochester’s Hospice Regatta

GRHC/Hospice owes special thanks to the Rochester area’s
sailing community, which made the 2004 Hospice Regatta a spectacular
success.
Unless you’re a sailor yourself, you may not know much about
this group. It includes highly skilled, competitive racers as well
as a larger number of men and women who just love to sail –
and who have adopted Hospice as a cause they support.
For the past six years, Genesee Yacht Club and Rochester Yacht Club
have taken turns hosting the Hospice Regatta – in 2004, it
was GYC’s turn. Shumway Marine pitches in to race its fleet
of Ideal 18 boats, while sailors from Pultneyville, Brockport and
Sodus Bay also respond to the call, “Set sail and celebrate
life.”
For some, supporting the Regatta is an expression of gratitude for
care provided to a family member, friend or neighbor who needed
Hospice services to assure comfort and dignity at the end of life.
For others, it’s a more general effort to give something back
to the community.
On Saturday, August 28, 94 skippers and crews raised their sails
on Lake Ontario in three fleets. Those boats sailed in memory of
more than 280 loved ones, whose names were added to the Regatta’s
Memorial Sail for 2004 in an enduring tribute.

Many skippers and crew accepted the challenge of soliciting donations
to sponsor their boat in order to ensure Hospice services will be
available to anyone who needs them, whether they have health insurance
or not. Two boats collected more than $3,000 apiece in donations
to Hospice, much of it in small contributions from “Hospice
Helpers.”
In all, more than 700 individuals and businesses helped raise a
record-breaking $65,000 at the Hospice Regatta — more than
any other event in the history of GRHC Hospice. The sailing community’s
unprecedented contributions assist GRHC Hospice in providing vital
comfort-focused services to about 400 patients a day, or almost
3,000 individuals and families each year. On behalf of everyone
who turns to Hospice when they confront the challenges of terminal
illness, we offer our deepest thanks.

Hospice
Regatta 2003
August 23, 2003
For the second year in a row, Keith Burhans of Irondequoit won
The Hospice Regatta on Saturday, August 23, at the helm of his 23-foot
Sonar yacht. As the Regatta winner, Burhans will represent Rochester
next spring in the National Hospice Regatta Championship in Annapolis.
Kiki Voss, skipper of the J-22 "Pipsqueak," finished second.
Another J-22, "Chout Out," finished third with John Newell
as skipper. Also for the second straight year, Marvin Hill of Webster
won the Hildebrandt Spirit Award, which is presented to the skipper
who raises the most money in donations to Hospice.
More than 550 people attended the post-race Party and Awards Ceremony
hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC). Proceeds from the Regatta
exceeded $50,000 - the largest total in the
event's five-year history. This event benefits the hospice services
of Genesee Region Home Care, which helps more than 2,000 Rochester-area
families each year care for loved ones who are terminally ill.
Until now, The Hospice Regatta offered sailboat racing only. This
year, the Rochester Offshore Powerboat Association (ROPA) organized
a "poker run" for 11 powerboat enthusiasts to complement
the sailing competition.
Spectators cruised on the Harbor Town Belle paddle-wheeler to watch
the racing, then returned to RYC for the barbecue dinner and the
awards ceremony emceed by Tony Infantino, WRMM 101.3. Two bands
(J.B. & Company and Lama Jama) performed, and a small fleet
of remote-controlled model yachts raced in the basin next to the
Yacht Club during the party.
Dozens of businesses, individuals and families sponsored boats
to celebrate the life of loved ones who have died, and many skippers
sailed in the Regatta in memory of family members or friends. As
part of the event, people wrote the names of loved ones on a special
commemorative
sale, an observance that will become a new tradition for the Regatta

Hospice Regatta: A Race
for Hope
August 24, 2002
You don't need a boat on Saturday, August 24 to delight in the thrilling
spectacle of 90 colorful vessels vying for position - with all proceeds
going to benefit Hospice.
Cruise out on the lake to see the races aboard
the Harbor Town Belle, then return to Genesee Yacht Club for a Picnic/Barbecue
with other Hospice supporters and the sailors. There's plenty to
do on shore - tour the Coast Guard's new boat, explore a boat show
of yachts and cruisers, enjoy live music, and win wonderful prizes
in raffles and auctions.
Of course, you don't have to attend to help.
You can also show your support by sponsoring a sailboat with a donation
in memory of a loved one. Either way, you'll ensure that Hospice
has the resources it needs to fulfill its mission of compassion
and comfort.

sail or race on Lake Ontario. The competition will be administered
by a respected, professional race
committee.
Both the casual cruiser
and the seasoned racer will find this event appealing - as long
as they have an appetite for good fellowship. Expect at least 80
boats to assemble for a colorful and enjoyable outing. (Because
the spinnaker race will be certified as a qualifying event for the
National Hospice Cup championship in April, 2000, the Regatta should
become one of Lake Ontario's prestigious racing events.) Sponsors
and individual patrons can observe the race from the comfort of
private powerboats, whose hospitable captains will serve lunch and
beverages to their guests. Individual passages are also available
on a large excursion boat for a more modest fee.
On-Shore Activities Regatta
weekend begins in grand style on Friday, September 17 with an elegant reception at an exclusive site near the water. Sponsors and
individual patrons will be hosted at this party, which will be limited
to 120 persons. Even dedicated landlubbers who rarely go near the
water can join the fun on race day by attending the Post-Race Banquet,
which gathers under a tent on the grounds of the Rochester Yacht Club.
Race trophy presentations follow the alfresco dinner. Sponsors and
patrons are welcome guests at this event, too. |
